REUTERS/Rick Scuteri (UNITED STATES - Tags: CRIME LAW SPORT ICE HOCKEY HEADSHOT)REUTERS EDMONTON - Edmonton Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin(notes) will serve 15 days in an Arizona jail after he dropped his appeal Tuesday of a drunk driving conviction.Khabibulin was found guilty last August of three charges stemming from driving under the influence. The 38-year-old appeared in Scottsdale, Ariz., courtroom to accept the minimum sentence of 30 days in jail, a $4,016.60 US fine and a requirement that he participate in an alcohol treatment program, a court spokesman said.Half of the jail term will be served in the Maricopa County Jail, and half will be spent under house arrest with an electronic monitoring bracelet. The treatment requirements have already been completed, he said.“I eagerly anticipate a timely return to Edmonton for training camp, where I will strive to be the best player, teammate, and citizen possible,” Khabibulin said in a statement. Khabibulin was pulled over near his Phoenix home in February 2010 after he was caught speeding in his black Ferrari. He agreed to a field sobriety test, and later a blood test, which revealed a blood-alcohol content of .164, more than twice the legal limit. The hockey player was charged with driving 40 to 70 km/h over the speed limit, and his high blood alcohol level led to charges of extreme DUI, which comes with a minimum 30-day jail term.Khabibulin was sentenced by Judge B. Monte Morgan in Scottsdale court last August.Defence lawyer Mark DuBiel appealed the sentence, putting the case in limbo for nearly a year. Khabibulin said he decided to withdraw the appeal, as the lengthy legal process put his ability to attend training camp in jeopardy. He said while his legal team felt they had a strong appeal, he accepts his sentence and will serve his time within the next month.Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini accepted the court’s decision, and said the team expects the goaltender to meet all of his obligations prior to training camp. The Oilers signed Khabibulin in 2009 to a four-year, $15-million US contract.cpierse@edmontonjournal.com
