"It's still early in training camp, but Tennessee Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan already has one technique down pat — backpedaling.A day after defending himself for leaving the team unannounced, Finnegan admitted on Monday that he had been dishonest. He apologized to his bosses, teammates, fans and media.Did he leave because he was upset about his contract? On Sunday he said no, but on Monday he acknowledged that failure to get a new deal had gotten to him.Did he notify the Titans he was leaving, skipping out on Saturday's meetings and practice? On Sunday he said yes, but a day later confessed that also was a fib.An emotional player on the field, Finnegan said he got too worked up off it."It has been nothing but a distraction to the team that was not needed,'' he said. "When I was talking with my agent, because I wasn't happy with some of the things said (in contract talks) I let the emotions get the best of me."I took the negotiations personally and I shouldn't have, and it affected everyone in the community and the team and I deeply regret that. … Was it right? Absolutely not. I can't let my team down like that. It won't happen again."Coach Mike Munchak accepted Finnegan's apology, but said he still would fine the sixth-year pro for leaving camp. Under the new collective bargaining agreement, that fine can be up to $30,000."At the time he did what he thought was right and now he realizes it probably wasn't,'' Munchak said. "You don't forget stuff, but you forgive some of the things that happen. It is part of the business; guys are going to make mistakes. Step one was getting him in and getting back to work.""
The Lions could again be in hot water with the league over tampering. Then-Dolphins running back Ricky Williams told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel on Monday that the Lions talked to him after the Miami-Detroit game last Dec. 26. Williams said that after the Lions' 34-27 victory, Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan - Williams' coach in 2005 as an assistant under Nick Saban - approached him and said, "If you need a home, we'd love to have you on our team.""
"The NFL has informed its 32 teams that this summer's supplemental draft will be held August 17, according to a source within the league. No names of eligible players were included as part of the notice. Furthermore, teams were not notified as to when the draft order will be determined. The only information sent at this time, according to the source, was the date of the draft. The supplemental draft typically occurs on or around July 15, approximately 10 days prior to the start of training camps. This year, however, the date was pushed back due to the lockout.Former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor and Georgia running back Caleb King are thought likely to be among those included. North Carolina defensive end Michael McAdoo, who was suspended for the 2011 season due to academics, is also thought to be considering a request to be included in the draft. "
