OAKLAND -- Nearly two weeks ago, the Messalonskee High School baseball team beat Bangor for the first time in school history. With that historic victory in mind, it will be Saturday's win against the Rams that Messalonskee players and fans remember most fondly.
Dylan Foster's two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning gave Messalonskee the lead, then the Eagles held back Bangor rallies in the final two innings to take a 4-3 win in the Eastern Class A semifinals.
"Since my freshman year we hadn't beaten them," said Messalonskee senior catcher Brandon Hall, who was 3 for 3 with two RBIs. "It's always big when you beat Bangor."
Top-ranked Messalonskee (14-4) will face No. 3 Cony (14-4) in the regional championship game at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Morton Field in Augusta. It's the first regional final appearance for Messalonskee. No. 4 Bangor ended its season 14-4.
"I was afraid for our team, since we did so well in the season, that we were going to get knocked out first thing in the playoffs," Messalonskee coach Ray Bernier said. "Now they've shown our team is for real."
Bangor took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run double by Kyle Savage. In the bottom of the inning, Patrick Wrigley and Joe Dumont hit back-to-back singles with one out. After Cale Knox popped out to second base, Hall singled to score Wrigley and cut Bangor's lead to 3-2. Pinch-hitter Cam Ray hit an infield single to load the bases, and Foster's hard grounder up the middle bounced over a diving Cody McInnis' glove and into center field, plating the tying and go-ahead runs.
"I knew it was going through when I hit it, and I just looked up and saw (Hall) wheeling around third. It's a good feeling," Foster said.
Added Bangor coach Jeff Fahey: "I think we're probably two evenly-matched teams, and I think it's unfortunate the winning run scored on a bad hop ball. Hey, it's part of the game. They deserve to go (to the regional final). They got the hits when they needed to."
Bangor stranded a runner at second base in the sixth against reliever Nick Booth. In the seventh, Booth retired the first two hitters quickly before pinch-hitter Devin Lyshon earned a walk on a 10-pitch at-bat. Booth then walked Mack Susi before getting Chad Kelley to pop out to second baseman Sam Dexter, who caught the ball in shallow right field to end the game.
"I was more nervous for Nick. I was nervous for him because I wanted him to do well," Bernier said. "Give Bangor credit. They find ways to win. Thankfully, the kids gutted it out and got it done."
