UpdatedAug 16, 2011 12:28 AM ETBRIAN Mitchell hadn't been anything special during his first NFLtraining camp with the Washington Redskins. He was attempting tomake the conversion from quarterback to running back and had beenso shaky that he wondered if he would be cut without ever gettingon the field. That's how he ended up volunteering for kickoffreturn duty for the 1990 preseason opener "I had to do something tomake them notice me," he said. And then the Atlanta Falcons put theopening kickoff in his hands, and Mitchell returned it 92 yards fora touchdown.Coaches knew his name after that, and thus began a good, productive NFL career. He played for three teams during a 14-yearcareer, and when it ended, only Jerry Rice had topped his 23,330total yards. There's no telling what would have happened if hehadn't returned that one kickoff, if he hadn't done that one thingto make coaches want to take a second and third look at him.Mitchell is why NFL coaches love early preseason games like the onethe Texans will play tonight against theJets at Reliant Stadium. Both teams will look at their startersonly briefly, then turn the game over to the younger players who, like Mitchell did in 1990, hope to make a name for themselves."We'll see who's going to step up to the plate," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said.Ogbonnaya in the mix His team has openings at defensive line, linebacker and fullback. The punting situation is unsettled. Andsome of the young running backs and receivers have been so goodthat coaches can't wait to see them in live competition. During thefirst two weeks of training camp, the Texans have been thrilled at thework of running back Chris Ogbonnaya. He began camp behind ArianFoster, Derrick Ward, Ben Tate and Steve Slaton on the depth chart.Of the players ahead of him on the depth chart, only Ward hasstayed healthy. So Ogbonnaya has gotten more work than he mightnormally have, and has been terrific. "When a young man has had thecamp he's had, I think we're all excited to watch him go play,"Kubiak said. Now he needs to do it in live competition. He's notgoing to pass Foster and Ward on the depth chart, but he hasperformed so well that it's easy to envision him on the opening-dayroster. There are others. Second-year cornerback Sherrick McManishas been good, probably better than incumbent starter KareemJackson. Improving the cornerback play is vital after a season inwhich the Texans were last in passing yardsallowed and 23rd in interceptions. They signed veteran JohnathanJoseph to play one spot, but are trying to figure out the other. The Texans have not neglected theposition. General manager Rick Smith has taken seven corners in thepast four drafts, and is hoping this is the camp a couple of themstep up and win a job. Rookie wideouts Lestar Jean and Jeff Maehlalso have drawn Kubiak's praise. Likewise, J.J. Watt, ConnorBarwin, Shaun Cody, Mario Williams and Earl Mitchell have doneeverything coaches hoped they'd do, and then some. But beginningtonight, it matters. It's one thing to do it in practice, but thepath to the opening-day roster goes through the four preseasongames. After tonight, coaches will have about three quarters oflive football to evaluate, and somewhere along the way, someonewill play his way onto the roster. As for Tate, Trindon Hollidayand Slaton, their time might be running out. Each has been slowedby injuries or not made a good impression, and all three need toget back on the field quickly to have any chance of making theroster. Injuries hold some back And there are things the Texans don't know. Brian Cushing isa huge key for this defense, but his indoctrination to a new schemehas been delayed as he recovers from offseason knee surgery. Fosteralso has spent most of this camp sidelined with a hamstring injury.Kubiak would prefer him on the practice field, but his realpriority is having Foster 100 percent for the opener. This will bean important night for Matt Leinart, who will play a couple ofquarters in relief of Matt Schaub. The Texans haven't felt this good abouttheir backup quarterback situation since Sage Rosenfels departedtwo years ago. Kubiak figured Leinart would sign with a teamwilling to allow him to compete for the starting job. When hedecided to return, Kubiak couldn't have been happier. "First off, Ithink he's a leader," Kubiak said. "He's got that 'it' factor thatpeople seem to gravitate to. I hope he gets his career going againand plays 10 or 12 years and comes back as a starter. That's whatwe all want for him." With Wade Phillips looking at his new 3-4defensive scheme for the first time, with depth issues atlinebacker and competition for the starting cornerback spotopposite Joseph, there's plenty coaches will learn from onepreseason game. Mainly, it's relief from teammates pounding onteammates, and as Barwin said last week, "Yeah, we're ready forthat." richard.justice@chron.com twitter.com/richardjusticeTerms & Conditions |Privacy |Copyright |? 2009 LexisNexis, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
